Sydney Valenta was born in the metro area of Minnesota, attending Waconia Public Schools through high school before graduating and attending Drake University. During high school, Sydney played varsity women’s hockey as well as being involved with NHS, SADD, and Yearbook. She chose Drake University due to its small size and its excellent journalism program. At Drake, she majored in Advertising and Public Relations, in the School of Journalism and Mass Communication. During her classes, she learned skills such as Photoshop, HTML, Media Buying, and Social Media. She was involved with the service fraternity, Alpha Phi Omega. She is graduating from Drake University in May and hopes to end up doing corporate communications. During her career at Drake, she has been lucky enough to work with local community partners such as Lefty’s Live Music, Drake Neighborhood Association, and Svens Skincare. Her favorite parts of working with clients have been seeing how their tactics and strategies have had a noticeable impact and hearing how it has helped them grow. She also enjoys being able to present a polished, finished product to the client.
In her free time, Sydney spends her time with her German Shepherd mix and at her other job as a server, so if you’re grabbing lunch in the Des Moines area, you might see her. Her other hobbies include reading nice historical non-fiction (her favorite being Salt: A History of the World) and watching video essays. Some of her passion projects include raising awareness for inequality in women’s sports and education programs. Her own experience seeing the disparity in high school sports motivates her to push for more Title IX enforcement. She enjoys traveling, having visited London, Rome, and New York before and is waiting for the pandemic to be over to travel again. After graduation in May 2021, she plans on going on a month-long road trip to destress after finally graduating. She also hopes that one day she’ll be able to return to the ice and play on a women’s hockey league again.
